Micro-Needling

Through the years men and women alike are bothered by a variety of skin imperfections. They may have acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles or enlarged pores that they wish to improve.

Now, Micro-Needling, a new technology for improving these skin imperfections without surgery, is performed by our medical providers for patients in our region.

What is Micro-Needling?

Micro-Needling is a minimally invasive treatment that transforms the look and feel of damaged skin to smoother, cleaner healthier looking skin. It involves a small device that penetrates the skin creating controlled micro-dermal injuries. This stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin which in turn fills these imperfections, thus improving skin texture and firmness. While Micro-Needling alone will stimulate collagen, your doctor may choose to add cosmeceuticals, stems cells, or growth factors to further enhance cell rejuvenation.

What are the benefits of Micro-Needling?

With Micro-Needling many skin conditions can be treated. Micro-Needling improves skin texture and firmness, reduces the appearance of acne and acne scarring, minor scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, enlarged pores, melasma and hyperpigmentation. Micro-Needling can be used on all skin types and almost anywhere on the body, even around the eyes. Micro-Needling provides another valuable tool in improvement of acne scarring, stretch marks and wrinkles and our patients are pleased with their results.

How many Micro-Needling treatments will I need?

That depends on the area and condition of the skin being treated. Many skin problems can be effectively treated with a series of 2 – 3 Micro-Needling treatments repeated 4 – 6 weeks apart as needed, while others may need between 4 – 8 Micro-Needling sessions 6 weeks apart as needed.

How soon will I see results?

Improvement is often seen within 1 – 2 weeks, however achieving the desired results may take a couple of months depending on the severity of the condition being treated. For 1 – 2 days after the treatment there may be some mild swelling and redness similar to a sunburn.

Is Micro-Needling safe?

There is relatively little risk in Micro-Needling performed by skin care professionals using medical grade Micro-Needling devices performed in a medical office. Micro-Needling is safe to use on all skin types and colors and there is little risk of infection.

CAUTION: “At home models” can present many safety risks. They include improper hygiene before, during and after the Micro-Needling takes place; the quality of the needle; the appropriate needle length; and the possibility of infection and/or scarring.

What are Micro-Needling treatments like?

Before your Micro-Needling treatment, our medical provider will evaluate your skin condition and your goals to determine the appropriate number of sessions. Prior to your treatment a numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area. Depending on the treatment area the doctor may choose from a variety of devices which include rollers with wheels of needles or a pen-like headpiece with clusters of tiny needles. There are also automated micro-needling devices and a device that combines micro-needling with radio frequency. Typically the tiny channels created during the treatment close within an hour. It is recommended to avoid sun exposure, retinol products, exfoliants, and waxing prior to the treatment.
