Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty

Millions of people snore. Loss of sleep due to snoring can disrupt your daily life, interfere with your perceptual ability and psychomotor functions, and worsen serious health problems such as hypertension.

Snoring has a tendency to worsen with age, and is mostly considered a nuisance for the bed partner of the snorer. Our doctor performs a Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) for patients in our region as an outpatient treatment for snoring. Our doctor will determine if you are a candidate for this procedure after a thorough examination.

What is Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty?

LAUP is a safe and effective treatment for snoring and may be used to treat mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Our doctor performs Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty using a laser to trim the soft palate and remove all or part the uvula. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. In some cases patients only need one procedure session, however multiple procedures are often necessary to optimize your results. In some cases patients have been known to develop OSA after the procedure.

What can I expect after Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty?

Usually, patients will report an immediate noticeable reduction in their snoring. As they heal their improvement continues. Patients return to their normal routine almost immediately. Most discomfort lasts up to 10 days and includes pain similar to a sore throat.
